Dancing, shimmering Dichroic is the Cinderella of the jewelry world. "Only" glass, it rivals the celestial diamond in shine, shimmer and refractory attributes and color, Oh, the colors! Rubies, emeralds, topaz, aquamarine and amethyst have quite the rival in Dichroic. Developed by NASA for the space program; someone with a twinkle in their eye said "WOW! that would make gorgeous jewelry!" and it took off like a rocket to the moon. Dichroic glass is made by melting multiple, micro-thin layers of different metals(aluminium, chomium, magnesium, silicon, titanium, or zerconium) to the surface of the glass causing colors of brilliant flashing qualities. This glass is then sold in small sheets, cut into shapes by the artist to make jewelry. I also cut an exact piece of black or other glass and fuse them together causing the sparkling effect to deepen and intensify. This process of fusing and annealing takes about 10 hours in a kiln. Any photography can not do this glass justice. Please note that the photographs do NOT give justice to the sparkle and depth of this unique glass. |
